A brief biography of Late Mozammel Huq
Many people around the world are unconditionally doing good works to benefit society. Mozammel Huq was one of them,
a well known industrialist. He was born in a noble Muslim family in the Baghata village (Shilmandi Union, middle of Panchdona & Shah-e-Pratap) in Narsingdi on 22 December 1920. His father,
late Alhaj Khalilullah, was a renowned social worker. His uncle late Afrad was a scholar and a teacher at Faridpur Zilla School. As a result,
Mozammel Huq went to Faridpur to continue his education from Class 3, in 1932 and passed Matriculation from the same school.
After finishing school he moved to Dhaka and studied at Ahsanullah College of Engineering (Currently BUET). He was a recipient of Rs.50 scholarship from
Haji Md. Mohsin fund. He excelled in games and sports and was the Champion student in 1944. In 1945, he joined government service in Kolkata. In 1947,
he was transferred to East Pakistan. In 1952 he resigned from his job and established his construction Company, Jubilee Engineering Ltd. It constructed many projects,
including the Directorate of Food building, parts of Chittagong Medical College, Sylhet Medical College, etc.
Mozammel Huq started Janata Jute Mills Limited at Palash,Ghorashal which started production in 1969. Currently,
Janata is the leading jute mill, with the widest range of jute products. It has exported it’s jute products
to 130+ countries so far. To help the workers and employees of the jute mill he established a school named
Janata Adarsha Bidyapith in 1969. The school is now known as an A-class school in Narsingdi district.
Mozammel Huq also set up Zenin Cold Storage, in Cumilla in 1980. He than set-up another jute mill,
Sadat Jute Industries Ltd. beside it. It too is a leading and successful jute mill in the country.
Mozammel Huq was a family person. In 1947, he married the daughter of Sadat Ali Bhuiyan, Begum Fazilatun Nessa.
He was the father of two sons and a daughter. His first son, Najmul Huq has a MA in Geography from Dhaka University.
His second son, Mahmudul Huq has a B.A. Hons from Sussex University, UK. The 2 sons, till takeover by AKIJ, have been Managing
Directors of the 2 Mills. His only daughter, Roushan Akhtar is an M.A. in Economics from Dhaka University And MS in Economics
from University of Wales, UK. She is currently living in Australia.
Mozammel Huq was an active member of the Victoria Sporting Club, Dhaka. He was it’s President also. He was also the
first President of the Bangladesh Swimming Federation. He was a founder Director of Uttara Bank Ltd.
Mozammel Huq started a scholarship program in his Faridpur Zilla School and with his wife, created a trust named
"Fazilatun Nessa and Mozammel Huq Education Trust" for his home district, Narsingdi. He also started an Alia Madrasa
in his village Baghata. Today they might not be amongst us in this world but their deeds are still there.
